Fall 2008 Connections Conference

Well, I just returned home from Las Vegas and the Fall 2008 Connections conference. It was good to see friends that I hadn’t seen in a long time, and I think my sessions went fairly well.

As promised during the sessions, here’s a link to my Skydrive folder containing the slides from the presentations.

Please don’t hesitate to send an email or leave a comment here if you have any questions/comments.

Thanks, and see you in the Spring!

Dear Ted,

My collegues who visited the conference are impressed with the quality of various presentations. The also mention that, among other suggestions, the use of SCOPE statements in place of CASE, IIF was heavily advertized to improve efficiency.

I've been getting familiar with the whole SCOPE concept but a few questions arise:

1. Is there a way to define a new calculated member within the SCOPE statement?

something like for [Gross Profit]
SCOPE (...);
THIS=[Net Revenue]-[Cost];

In my current settings, I define the [Gross Profit] calc as a separate calculated member and then use a SCOPE script to limit it as I have not found a way to 'name' the calc in the script to use for browsing.

2. For some reason, SCOPed values are not included in the grand totals by rows. If I have Years in Columns and SCOPE defined for 2001 then [Grand Total] exlude 2001 data. Any way out?

Thanks a lot for your help. Apologies if the questions seem naive, I have just started.
